A genius agricultural scientist, a teacher, academician, visionary and most important a great  institution builder Late Dr. S. V. Patil contributed immensely for the development of College of Agriculture, Dharwad, which become precursor for formation of second Agricultural University in the state during 1986, to cater to the needs of agricultural education and research of Northern Karnataka. Because of his high intellectual visionary gleam he is responsible for establishment of College of Veterinary at Bidar and College of Agriculture at Raichur which became independent universities. He has established Forestry College at Sirsi and Ponnampet, up gradation of Diploma in Agricultural Engineering to degree programme at Raichur and Agro-forestry research at Dharwad during 1972 and the model was adopted by ICAR, as  AICRP on Agro-forestry across the country. With this great vision and commitment to state agriculture, he has occupied the coveted position of Vice–Chancellor, University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangaluru during 1985.

In his 45 years of illustrious service as teacher and academician as Director of Instructions (Agri and Post Graduate) and Vice- Chancellor of UAS, Bangaluru he set a very high morale of conduct among the teachers, scientists and students and made silent revolution in agricultural education and research in Karnataka.

He is aptly called as Krishi Rushi of Agriculture. To pay tribute to legendary Dr.S.V.Patil it arouses interest among his students, disciples, university faculty and farmers wish to establish a Dr. S.V. Patil Chair in his memory on the eve of his centenary year 2022, at UAS, Dharwad with the following activities for sustainable agriculture development and welfare of farmers in northern Karnataka.

Hon’ble Chief Minister, Government of Karnataka, during the budget speech, announced the Establishment of Dr. S. V. Patil Chair for Research, Training and Farmer Welfare at University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad.
